Rodney Adams has pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm following an armed raid on a bookmakers in Green Lanes, north London, in September 2008. He fled the scene with around £600 after threatening two members of staff with an imitation firearm. He has been jailed for seven years (Haringey Independent, 28 October 2009).

Ashley Bucknor shot dead a teenager in an attack at a supermarket in Walworth, south London, in August 2008 (see Incidents). The shot was fired in retaliation following an earlier incident. He was found guilty of murder and must serve at least 32 years. A retrial was ordered on appeal. Bucknor has been jailed for at least 24 years after being found guilty at the retrial (BBC, 23 December 2010). One of the guns used in the attack was a 1943 Colt 45 which has also been used in a string of gangland murders and shootings, the first in November 2002 (Evening Standard, 24 December 2010).

Drivers were shot at by air rifle snipers in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. Police say motorists only managed to avoid an accident by good luck. The drivers of three vehicles contacted police after incidents which damaged their cars.

Kevin McClenaghan, an off-duty police officer from Brierley Hill, West Midlands, has been commended for his bravery after he confronted a man in January 2009. The man wearing camouflage clothes was walking away from a parked car with what looked like a firearm in his hands. He followed the man, who then pointed an air rifle, and pulled the gun from his reach before arresting him.

Two cat owners in Epping, Essex, have leafleted dozens of their neighbours after a double attack on their animals. One of their cats was shot with an air rifle and another of their cats had been poisoned. Their vet condemned the easy availability of air rifles.
