Police officers searched a property in Kirkby, Merseyside and recovered three suspected firearms, a crossbow, machete, a flick knife, drugs and a suspected stolen scrambler bike. A man was arrested on suspicion of offences including producing cannabis, three counts of possessing a suspected firearm, being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug and theft of a motor vehicle.

Police officers responding to reports of a stabbing in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, found damage to the property “consistent with a firearm discharge”. Police appealed for information after the victim, a man who had sustained a stab injury, refused to cooperate with police enquiries.

Karl Mangham, aged 19, has been jailed for five years after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession with intent to supply a Class A drug. In April 2023, Mangham threatened a man on a street in Doncaster, South Yorkshire and told him he would “shoot everyone” in his house. Shortly afterwards, he fired a handgun twice at a nearby property that was occupied by five children. Following sentencing, a police spokesperson said, “Mangham’s actions not only put a whole family in immediate and serious danger, but caused terror for people who were in the street at the time.”

Firearms officers were deployed following a report of a mental-health-related incident concerning a man with a potential firearm in Swindon, Wiltshire. After a stand-off, the incident was safely resolved, with the man being arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Richard Riley, aged 49, has been jailed for twelve years after being found guilty of possessing ammunition without a firearms certificate, possessing ammunition when prohibited, four counts of possession of a prohibited firearms weapon and two counts of possession of a firearm when prohibited. In September 2022, police seized six converted blank-firing, self-loading pistols and 72 rounds of ammunition from a container in Beighton, South Yorkshire. Riley was linked forensically to at least one of the guns. When police arrived to search Riley’s home in March of this year, they saw a weapon being thrown over a fence into a neighbour’s garden. The recovered item was a converted blank-firing, self-loading pistol. Officers also found five modified 9mm cartridges at the property.

After a member of staff at a takeaway was shot in the leg outside his place of work in Liverpool, Merseyside, he saw a man reportedly pointing a BB gun at him. Two men were subsequently arrested: one on suspicion of Section 39 assault and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and the other for intimidating a witness.

Aiden Lewis, aged 25, has been handed a sixteen-month suspended prison term with 40 rehabilitation days after admitting possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. In August 2022, Lewis pointed a plastic BB gun at the supervisor of a caravan park in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire after trying to recover property left there by his father. The barrel of the gun had been drilled out but it couldn’t fire. The court heard that Lewis has ADHD, anxiety and depression and reacts badly in stressful situations.

Following the pursuit of a car in Birmingham, West Midlands, police officers found the vehicle abandoned outside an address in the city. Officers recovered a handgun, cannabis, Class A drugs and equipment used in drug dealing inside the property and subsequently arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, possession of a firearm and possession of drugs with intent to supply.
