A man is understood to be recovering in hospital after shooting himself in the chest and shoulder in his home in Pennsylvania, Exeter. He was putting his rifle back in its gun cabinet after returning from hunting when he leant over the weapon and it discharged.

Two police officers have been commended for stopping a man who walked into the police station in Woodford, Essex, from hurting himself and others with a kitchen knife and an airgun in June 2009. The man was later arrested and found guilty of possessing an air weapon and possessing a knife.

More than 40 people were evacuated from a council building in Swindon, Wiltshire, after a man allegedly entered the building with a replica firearm. Police were called when someone spotted the weapon. A man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm in a public place but will not be facing further police action (Swindon Advertiser, 26 October 2009).

Two men were being treated for serious injuries after shooting incidents in Battersea, south London. Police were called to reports of shots being fired in a street and discovered a man with stab wounds but did not find anyone with gunshot injuries. A short while later armed police surrounded a van and a man was pulled from the vehicle. He had been shot in the leg and there was gunshot damage to the van. The police have not confirmed whether the incidents were linked. Five youths have been arrested and bailed.

John McKenzie sparked a gun scare when he was on a drinking binge in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. He was seen with an air pistol on a train and in a taxi. On the train he was heard mumbling about shooting an ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend by another passenger. He has been jailed for a total of 16 months after admitting two charges of possessing a firearm with intent to cause someone to believe that unlawful violence might be used.
