Raymond Nugent, aged 73, has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years after being found guilty of 45 firearm offences. After National Crime Agency personnel told police that Nugent had imported a blank firing weapon from the Czech Republic, officers searched his home in Havering, East London in November 2018. Several safes were discovered, inside which ammunition and firearms were stored. A number of viable firearms were found to have been made by Nugent, who cut out cardboard templates before pressing metal to create the weapons. The court heard that one weapon was “25% more powerful than a factory-produced firearm of similar calibre and style”. Nugent had also reactivated firearms and converted blank ammunition and weapons, including a stun gun, an Italian Bruni (BBM) Model ME .38 calibre revolver and a Turkish Atak 914 self-loading 9mm pistol, to fire. Following sentencing, a police spokesperson said, “Though no evidence was found of any associated criminality linked to Nugent’s activities, the arsenal he had in his possession was lethal and, in the wrong hands, quite capable of causing incredibly serious harm.”

Former police officer, Gareth Walters, has been handed a three-year community order with an alcohol treatment requirement and a rehabilitation course after pleading guilty to theft and to possession of an imitation firearm while committing an offence. In August last year, Walters stole items from a petrol station In Pencoed, South Wales. When challenged by a worker, Walters lifted his T-shirt to reveal the handle of a firearm in a holster and told the man to go back inside or he’d shoot. Later that night, Walters dialled 999 and admitted the robbery, adding that he had two guns — a Glock and a Russian-made handgun. He told officers where he was and asked them to come and to shoot him. After armed police detained Walters, he was found to be carrying a green imitation handgun and a small black BB gun. Another imitation firearm, two containers of BB pellets and plastic bullet shells were subsequently recovered from Walter’s home. The court heard that Waters’ life had “unravelled“ after he left the police with alcohol “completely taking over”. On the day of the robbery, Walters had reached “a low ebb” and wanted police to “shoot him and put him out of his misery”.
