A man has been arrested and detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act after he threatened an officer with what looked like a handgun and was involved in an armed confrontation with police in Much Wenlock, Shropshire.  He used the weapon to threaten a patrol officer and was then approached by firearms officers, who fired one shot and used police dogs to prevent the man from entering a residential property in the town. He was treated for dog bites he sustained before being detained.

A Browning rifle and three chainsaws were stolen during a burglary in Brent Eleigh, Suffolk. Police have appealed for information.

A cat has lost an eye after being shot three times with a pellet gun near her home in Oldham, Greater Manchester. She had a pellet removed from her stomach, but has been left with one in her shoulder which is too deeply embedded to remove, and also had to have her eye removed because of severe damage to her face from another pellet.

An 18-month-old cat has been shot in the leg with an air rifle in Leigh, Greater Manchester. The pellet shattered her bone and she will need to spend eight weeks confined to a cage in order to allow the injury to heal.

Donald Ewers, 47, has been jailed for 17 months for using an imitation handgun to threaten two Mormon missionaries who visited him at his home in Gloucester. He took out the weapon and pointed it at the victims after an apparently friendly conversation with the pair and said, "Don't mess around, if need I will kill" before allowing them to leave. Ewers was later arrested and police recovered the BB handgun from underneath his mattress.

Elliott McNenemy has been given a 12-month suspended sentence with supervision and mandatory attendance of alcohol and relationship programmes after firing a stun gun at his partner and mother of his baby as she sought to hide from him at her friend's house in Burnley, Lancashire. McNenemy had climbed into the house when he was denied entry, having told his babysitter that he felt like killing someone and having spent the night in a police station cell after being arrested. The victim and her friend were shaken but uninjured by the attack.

Three masked men armed with a sawn-off shotgun have robbed a bank in Westhoughton, Greater Manchester. One of the robbers stood guard with the weapon, which he pointed at passers by who came near, while the other two entered the bank with a ladder and climbed through the ceiling into the back side of the premises. They threatened staff with an axe, but the employees had set off the alarm and the trio escaped empty handed in a car that was later found burnt out in the town.

A three-year-old cat has been shot in the back with an air rifle near his home in Lewisham, east London. The pellet lodged close to his spine and he has been left unable to walk properly.

A Belgian Blue cow that escaped from her field has been shot dead by police marksmen in Grantham, Lincolnshire. The animal reportedly jumped fences and charged at people before being taken down by four police sniper shots in a car park near a school in the town. The cow's owner reportedly gave police permission for the animal to be killed after she became distressed and aggressive.

David Sanders has pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine and a bladed article, and possessing an imitation firearm in a public place. He held the airgun in the direction of a motorist who believed that the weapon was being aimed at him, although Sanders denied that he had intended to point the weapon at anyone on the road near Swindon, Wiltshire.
